History of Walter W. Martin, Inc. & LLC
Walter W. Martin has been in existence for almost 90 years. The business was started by Mr. Martin in a very small one room unit and since Mr. Martin is no longer with us the exact location is not known but assumed to be somewhere in the downtown area.
In January of 1964 the business was purchased by John Smith, Merle Smith and Dan Smith from Kansas City, Missouri. The business was located at that time in the Gorden building located at 1622 Arapahoe St. in downtown Denver (across from the Daniels & Fisher clock tower). The business was located on the second floor accessed only by a long stairway or by passenger elevator that was manned and had a sliding grate door. The showroom was located on the second floor and warehousing was on this floor as well as the fifth floor making for a very difficult means to fill a customer’s order. Shipping was also on the second floor with access to trucks for shipping and receiving. This arrangement made it very interesting for our customers, who also used the same entrance.
Operations continued from this location until 1967 when Urban Renewal declared the building was being condemned and would be razed to make way for a more modern building. With this announcement, the tenants had until 1969 to find a new location. Needless to say the new ownership had only operated from 1964 or three years with a lot of overhead plus repayment of the business loan. After many sleepless hours and with much difficulty with the Small Business Administration a loan was awarded to purchase property at 1900 Federal Blvd along with the construction of a new 20,000 sq. ft building designed to fit this operation. The site had great customer access as well as ease of receiving and shipping merchandise. After several years a 5,000 sq. ft. addition was added to the south side of the existing building that permitted an enclosed dock as well as some office space. In 2006 the business was sold to the three children of Dan Smith as John and Merle had long since sold out their interest in the business. The new owners are Ken Smith, Cindi Smith and Karri Smith.
The business was purchased in 1964 with the intent to always give the customers honesty, finest products and service available. The new owners guarantee to continue this tradition as long as they own the business. Hopefully the customers that use this company for their supplies will experience this quality service.
